Fateh Sagar is Udaipur's second big lake, north of Lake Pichola, and where locals spend their evenings. Walking the pal (the lake wall) is free; boats cost about ₹30–100 and run to Nehru Garden island. Come from sunset to about 10 pm for roasted corn, coffee carts and the lake breeze, or at sunrise for calm.

Ask anyone in Udaipur where they go in the evening and the answer is usually “the pal”. It’s the long wall along the eastern edge of Fateh Sagar, and between sunset and ten o’clock it’s the city’s living room.
A short history
Maharana Jai Singh built the first dam here in 1687. Floods destroyed it, and in the 1880s Maharana Fateh Singh rebuilt and enlarged it, which is why the lake carries his name. A canal links it to Lake Pichola to the south.
The pal walk
Walk the pal from the Moti Magri end northwards as the sun drops behind the hills. Along the way:
- Roasted corn (bhutta) with lime and chilli.
- Coffee carts, including Sai Sagar Coffee House, the city’s favourite evening coffee stop.
- Chai in a kulhad, lassi and pav bhaji.
- Families, students and couples watching the lake.
Boats
Small boats and speedboats run from the pal for about ₹30–100. Some go to Nehru Garden, an island park in the middle of the lake. Another island holds the Udaipur Solar Observatory, one of India’s main solar research sites; you can see it from the shore.
