Quick answer

Udaipur's best hidden places are the Ahar cenotaphs, Neemach Mata Temple above Fateh Sagar, Doodh Talai and Manikya Lal Verma Park at sunset, Badi Lake and Bahubali Hills, Kundeshwar Ji Mahadev, Udai Sagar lake, and the Old City lanes at dawn. Most are free and within 15 km of the Old City.

Key facts

  • Most of these places are free
  • All are within about 15 km of Lake Pichola
  • Best visited early morning or late afternoon

The postcard Udaipur is wonderful. But after a few days, or on a second visit, these are the places we’d take you. Our travel like a local page has more.

1. Ahar Cenotaphs

About 250 white royal memorials, 3 km east of the Old City, with almost no visitors. See our Ahar guide.

2. Neemach Mata Temple

A short but steep path climbs from the west bank of Fateh Sagar to a hilltop shrine with one of the widest views over the lake. Carry water and remove footwear at the shrine. Free.

3. Doodh Talai and Manikya Lal Verma Park

A small lake below the Karni Mata hill, with a terraced park where local families watch the sunset over Pichola. Take the ropeway up afterwards for a second, higher view.

4. Badi Lake

A reservoir in the hills about 12 km north-west of the city, quiet and surrounded by green in the monsoon. Locals call it Tiger Lake.

5. Bahubali Hills

A 20-minute climb above Badi Lake for sunrise over the Aravallis. See our sunrise hike guide.

6. Kundeshwar Ji Mahadev

A small, much-loved Shiva temple. Read our story on Kundeshwar Ji.

7. Udai Sagar

The lake east of the city, created by Maharana Udai Singh II, the city’s founder, a few years before Udaipur itself. Wide, open and quiet at sunset.

8. The Old City at dawn

Walk from Jagdish Temple to Gangaur Ghat and Lal Ghat around 7 am: temple bells, women washing clothes at the ghats, chai stalls opening and painted walls without crowds. Our heritage walk maps a route.

9. Animal Aid Unlimited

A rescue centre for injured street animals in Badi village. Check visiting hours first. See visiting Animal Aid.

10. Shilpgram on a weekday

Outside the December festival, the crafts village is calm and the artisans have time to talk. See our Shilpgram guide.

Tips

  • Combine Badi Lake, Bahubali Hills and Animal Aid in one morning.
  • Go early; light is better and it’s cooler.
  • Leave places as you found them. Many of these spots stay lovely because they’re quiet.
