Quick answer

The best time to visit Udaipur is October to March, when days are warm (around 22 to 30°C) and nights are cool. August and September are the most beautiful months for full lakes and green hills, and April to June is hot but quiet and cheaper.

Key facts

  • Peak season: October to March
  • Monsoon: July to September, lakes fill and the Aravalli hills turn green
  • Hottest months: May and June, often above 40°C in the afternoon
  • Biggest festivals: Diwali (October/November), Holi (March), Gangaur and the Mewar Festival (March/April)

Udaipur works in every season, but each season gives you a different city. Here is how the year actually feels to those of us who live here, and which months suit which kind of trip.

October to March: the classic season

This is when most people visit and it’s easy to see why. Mornings on the Fateh Sagar pal are cool enough for a shawl, afternoons are perfect for the City Palace, and the sunset boat on Lake Pichola is golden almost every evening.

The trade-off is crowds and prices. From about 20 December to 5 January hotels can double their rates, and the last sunset boat sells out by mid-morning. If you can, choose November, early December or February instead.

March and April: festival season

Holi is celebrated with a royal Holika Dahan at the City Palace, and a few weeks later Gangaur brings women carrying decorated idols to Gangaur Ghat, followed by the Mewar Festival. It’s one of the most colourful times to be here. By mid-April afternoons are hot, so plan your sightseeing early.

May and June: hot but rewarding

Summer is the season locals tell visitors to skip, but it has real advantages: hotel rooms for much less, no queues at the palace and quiet lakes. Plan days around the heat: monuments from opening time until 11 am, a long lunch and rest, then ghats and rooftops from 5 pm. Our post on surviving summer in Udaipur has more ideas.

July to September: the monsoon

When the rains are good, this is Udaipur at its most beautiful. Pichola and Fateh Sagar fill, waterfalls appear in the hills, and Sajjangarh finally lives up to its name as the Monsoon Palace. Hariyali Teej fills Fateh Sagar with green leheriya, and sweet shops start making ghevar.

Rain usually comes in short, heavy bursts rather than all day. Carry an umbrella, keep one spare day in your plan, and read our monsoon guide before you go.

Month-by-month at a glance

  • January: Cold mornings, clear days. Busy in the first week, calmer after.
  • February: Arguably the best month. Pleasant, fewer crowds than December.
  • March: Holi. Warm afternoons begin.
  • April: Gangaur and the Mewar Festival. Hot by midday.
  • May: Very hot. Cheapest hotels of the year.
  • June: Hot, humid towards the end as the monsoon approaches.
  • July: First rains. Lakes start to rise.
  • August: Green hills, Teej, full lakes in a good year.
  • September: Lush and quiet. A good value month.
  • October: Navratri and Dussehra. The season begins.
  • November: Diwali lights on the lakes. Excellent weather.
  • December: Shilpgram Utsav (21–30 December) and peak holiday crowds.

Our advice

If it’s your first trip, come in November or February. If you’ve seen the postcard Udaipur and want something different, come in August or September. And whenever you come, book the sunset boat early in the day. See our festival calendar for this year’s dates.

Frequently asked questions

Which month is best for Udaipur?

November and February are the most comfortable months: clear skies, warm afternoons and cool evenings, without the Christmas and New Year rush of late December.

Is Udaipur good in the monsoon?

Yes, if the rains have been good. From late July the lakes fill, Sajjangarh sits in the clouds and the hills are green. Boat rides can pause in heavy rain, so keep a spare day.

Is Udaipur too hot in summer?

Afternoons in May and June are very hot. You can still visit: sightsee from 7 to 11 am, rest in the afternoon and go out again after 5 pm. Hotels are noticeably cheaper.

When are hotels cheapest in Udaipur?

April to June and the early monsoon (July) usually have the lowest rates. Prices peak from late December to early January and on long weekends.
